Magazine Interview Sneak Peak

Here’s an interview I did for an art magazine recently.

Tell us about your brand.

I photograph Strength in Vulnerability. I believe in truly shameless body-positive photography — that the human body was made by our Creator to be seen and appreciated. I began shooting artistic nudes in 2006. I love to bring out the soul and strength of my models. I call my company Genesis to point us back toward the original innocence and strength of our naturally nude first mother, Eve and a return to our natural humanity.

When did you know that this was the right path for you?

artistic nude photo by Jason Lee

I remember even from childhood how something seemed “off” in a society that seemed to treat women as trophies or possessions, rather than fully articulated humans. I knew one day I wanted to do something to show that women could stand on their own two naked feet and point their chins high without fear of shame or reprisal.

What do you like most about what you do?

artistic nude photo by Jason Lee

Many times I work with first timers who have never modeled nude before. There are so many potential insecurities and societal/family baggage issues that can be a challenge. I find it amazing that I’ve gotten to see so many transformations! I have seen those insecurities and shy feelings melt away and a truly powerful fully-alive woman appear before my lens in the course of one of our shoots. It’s hard to put into words — it’s like a tremendous feeling in the air. I’ve seen former models go on to accomplish bold objectives in lots of areas of life. Some continue on in modeling or acting, others cherish their photos more privately and make a positive, quiet difference in their communities. Every heart that is changed makes a difference.

What is the biggest obstacle you have faced in your career, and how did you overcome it?

artistic nude photo by Jason Lee

As a photographer who only shoots nudes, I have had so many people who have wanted to shoot with me but are afraid of what others will think if they follow through. As a male photographer shooting mostly female models, I deal with lots of inappropriate comments, slurs and sexual innuendos. People have been so conditioned to associate nudity with sex, it’s like some Pavlovian bell that when someone is naked, they must immediately have sex! It gets to be pretty ridiculous in my Instagram DMs. I’ve had unsolicited penis pics sent to me from around the world from guys who think that a random penis is a proper way to say hello. And yes, I’ve had women send me sexual nudes, too. Is this what people do now?

The way I overcome this is by trying to educate people that the body is good and that sex is something we choose to do with our bodies, but it is not the only thing we do when naked. It’s actually been very interesting to me to have this type of conversation with people from all over the world and to see them consider an alternative to what they were previously taught.

If your phone could ring right now with your dream opportunity, what would that be?

My dream opportunity would be to do 25 photoshoots on each continent — to bring Strength in Vulnerability all over the globe!

What do you want people to remember most about you and your career?

I want people to remember me as someone who helped change their perspective a little and who brought a little extra beauty into the world.

Nicole and Jason Lee embarked on an adventure to the Camas Prairie Nature Preserve, aiming to capture the famed purple flowers as a backdrop. Despite being too late for the blooms, they improvised, embracing the windy conditions and utilizing the swaying grasses for a captivating body paint shoot, resulting in stunning imagery amidst nature’s embrace.

I think Nicole makes a great looking super hero. She is definitely out here saving the day!

Dreaming Out Loud

MODEL / E B

Braving the chill of the Great Boise Snopocalypse, we ventured into a winter wonderland to capture some truly magical moments. Despite the frozen streets and slippery conditions, our determination and sense of adventure prevailed as we made photographic history in the snow-covered parkland.

Amidst the frosty landscape, we crafted stunning shots that radiated E B’s unique energy and style. And as if on cue, God treated us to a glimpse of the beauty of the winter wonderland with the appearance of a majestic deer.

It was 15 degrees! Most people were staying indoors, but E B and I thought it was a fine time to navigate Snopocalypse through the frozen solid streets to a beautiful parkland. Mix in one part adventure, two parts motivation and we knocked out some stunning shots in the snow!

Exploring creative avenues with Ally, Jason Lee delves into experimental body paint for their shoot, one of her preferred ideas. Utilizing a “paint pour” technique with metallic and white biodegradable paints and glycerin, they craft visually stunning compositions. Jason finds joy in outdoor body painting, where art meets nature, leaving behind ephemeral masterpieces captured only in final photos, a testament to the beauty of temporary artistry.

When discussing options for our shoot with Ally, she said that the ideas that stood out to her most were experimental body paint and hot springs. In this post, I’ll share the body paint section. It turned out really cool! I did a “paint pour” style What do you think?

As Samsters adorned the mask, a transformation unfolded, akin to stepping onto a grand stage. In Jason Lee’s lens, her essence transcended, embodying a captivating presence that commanded attention. With each click, the mask became a conduit, channeling her innermost depths, unveiling a performance both enigmatic and enthralling.

After warming up with a few photos, we moved on to getting Sam completely covered in silver paint. I then placed a Harlequin mask in her hands and she took 20 paces down the beach. When she placed the mask on her face, it was like she’d stepped out onto the stage… She was a totally different person.

Katie and Crystal, real-life sisters, embark on a unique photoshoot adventure with Jason Lee. Embracing the bond of sisterhood, they bare both their bodies and their souls amidst the forest’s embrace. Their laughter echoes through the trees as they revel in the joy of shared experiences and sisterly connection, creating unforgettable moments captured in Jason’s lens.

When Katie and I worked together previously on her “best shoot ever!” we talked about creating a future shoot that would involve her sister Crystal. What a great idea! Here are the results of that discussion. Two sisters, both wearing their birthday suits and frolicking around the forest. Think they had fun?

My first World Naked Bike Ride Adventure

I just got back from an experience like I’ve never had before: the 2018 edition of the World Naked Bike Ride.

Portland is about a 7 hour drive from Boise. A couple friends and I jumped in the car and made the drive and it was absolutely worth the time invested.

It turns out that of all of the WNBR events worldwide, Portland has the largest one! They’ve been holding the ride for more than a decade and this year’s estimate was that over 18,000 people participated.

It’s kind of remarkable if you’ve never been. We biked across the city from our host’s home to the staging area and had about an hour and a half to soak in the evening sun and listen to a great fusion jazz band (High Step Society) before the ride began.

The whole thing is voluntary and run by volunteers: no tickets, no demands, no clothes!  AND there were no incidents of violence or sexual assault– just people truly being people.

It was an atmosphere of simple joy — it was quite relaxing — and I couldn’t stop feeling happy being there!

About half an hour before the ride, the crowd was starting to grow and the band was getting their groove on. I don’t it on video, but later the natural amphitheatre filled up with nude dancers having a wonderful time. You’ll have to watch the video to see what I mean, but when someone says “naked people dancing,” what do you think of? Maybe a darkly lit nightclub and a pole?

This wasn’t that. This was people having carefree fun in their skin.

I didn’t have my DSLR, but I did capture a few candids of people enjoying the pre-ride festivities, getting body-painted and managed to get just a few during the ride itself. Maybe next year a GoPro will be in order?

As I rode the 6 mile course through Portland’s beautiful neighborhoods and along a bluff overlooking the river, there were two things that really stuck out to me:

  1. Riding a bicycle naked feels just like riding one with clothes on.  Really! No, I didn’t get sore or chafed, but Yes, it was actually less sweaty and cooler because there weren’t any clothes to collect all that body heat.
  2. Along the whole bike route, parents brought their children outside on their driveways where they cheered us on, waving and ringing bells and welcoming us to their neighborhoods. It was such an emotionally positive experience!

I would definitely do this again and I hope you’ll come with me next year!  Here are a few photos:

Beyond the Setting Sun

MODEL / Anonymous
PHOTOGRAPHY / JASON LEE

In an intimate exploration of self-acceptance and liberation, a model reflects on her experience in a nude photoshoot by Jason Lee. She eloquently shares her journey of reconnecting with her natural form, emphasizing the purity of the soul and the beauty of the human body. Defying societal norms, she embraces freedom and advocates for the celebration of our innate physicality. Through vulnerability, she finds empowerment and urges others to embrace their bodies without shame.

Here’s what the model wrote about our shoot:

My soul lies right between the earth and my body. Or maybe it is a mixture of the two. I was always intrigued by the human body, and was always interested in the strange argument behind why humans shame other humans for letting our bodies be free.

I’ve always believed that our most natural form is the most important form for us to embrace.  To completely love ourselves, we have to start from the purity of the soul, and pay close attention to the shell that it lives in, which is our bodies.

When I was given the opportunity to do a nude photoshoot, I wouldn’t say it’s something that had crossed my mind before. But I also saw it as an opportunity for me as a human to practice the way of life we were originally created in, as humans.

It will always be nerve wrecking, to do the things that society now shames us for… to do the things the world makes us think is wrong.

But never in my life, did I ever feel so alive, so raw, so natural.

Standing there, in my pure, natural form, I found my body & soul connecting more and more to the earth around me.

Slowly, I felt it all become ONE. I found myself sinking into the earth, as if it’s all my body had ever known. I was stripped of all the restrictions that society had me drowning in.

I felt free, and that’s what it’s about. It’s about finding freedom — showing  the world that our bodies are the most unharmful things. Though our minds can be corrupted, but our bodies are merely just a build up of bones, skin, fat. They are natural, they are real, & instead of being shamed and sexualized, they should be glorified for the beauty they are, and the beauty of being human.

We humans need to take back the one thing we have to take pride in, and it’s what we were born with, and given as a gift. These shells our souls walk in, are not to be shamed, we need to accept them with open, bare arms. We need to accept them, love them, and set them free.

It is a different view than what the world is used to today, but it’s the most beautiful view, from the inside and out.

Anonymous, but Forever Changed

Life Begins at the Intersection

MODEL / Meagan
PHOTOGRAPHY / JASON LEE

In the serene surroundings of the Boise National Forest, Jason Lee captures the essence of Meagan’s first-time nude shoot. Meagan reflects on the experience, describing it as simultaneously freeing and terrifying, yet ultimately empowering. She challenges societal norms around body shame and the sexualization of nudity, advocating for self-acceptance and the celebration of individual beauty. Through her words, Meagan encourages others to embrace their uniqueness and allow their true selves to be seen, echoing the sentiment that everyone deserves to feel liberated and appreciated in their own skin.

Meagan and I actually chatted for a few years before this shoot took place. We were finally able to get our schedules aligned and I took her to a little place I like to call Burnt Creek. It had been ravaged by a forest fire at least a decade ago, but life is slowly returning to the area. This was Meagan’s first shoot and it turned out really special. You can’t fake the joy that fills a person’s spirit when they connect with beauty and being seen as a whole person, just as created.

Jason

“Participating in a nude shoot is one of the most freeing, yet terrifying experiences… but only because it’s doing something you’ve NEVER done. Being comfortable in front of a camera with clothes can be challenging, so a nude shoot really opens your mind to many possibilities. The human body is beautiful and is only sexualized because we body shame and hide ourselves away, constantly. I am grateful for clothes during the right circumstances, (like weather conditions or formal gatherings) however, I strongly believe hiding ourselves so much and all the time, has in truth also enabled us to hide away… not only our unique bodies, but also our minds. Allow Beauty TO BE SEEN. EVERYONE IS UNIQUE!”

Brighter Than the Pain

MODEL / Crystal
PHOTOGRAPHY / JASON LEE

In a poignant collaboration, Jason Lee embarks on his first “Trash the Dress” shoot with model Crystal. Amidst the backdrop of grief, Crystal bravely utilizes the session as a form of therapy, allowing Jason to capture the raw beauty of her emotions. Through the lens, they explore the cathartic journey of processing loss, demonstrating that love triumphs over pain. Crystal’s vulnerability and courage shine through, leaving a heartfelt imprint on the photos captured during this deeply meaningful experience.

It was such a blessing to be a part of this trauma-healing experience. Have you used art to process emotions?

Honest Song to Sing

MODEL / Kaitlin
PHOTOGRAPHY / JASON LEE

In collaboration with the bold and beautiful Kaitlin, Jason Lee captures a transformative journey of self-liberation. Reflecting on societal pressures to conform to narrow standards of beauty, Kaitlin bravely challenges these norms, recognizing her body as a sacred vessel rather than a source of shame. Through the empowering experience of shedding inhibitions and embracing her natural self, Kaitlin finds newfound freedom and confidence, defying societal judgments to reclaim ownership of her body and mind.

Here’s what she said about this shoot:

A few words on the experience… I’ve always been told that my body should be kept “sacred.” I’ve also been told that my body should look a certain way, that I will only be liked if my body fits a specific set of standards. I’ve spent my whole life trying to fit those standards and the ironic thing is that when I did, no one would have ever known that because I hid my body. I hid my body because I was taught it wasn’t ok to be shown and that if it was, I was creating a negative image for myself and was being “provocative.”
Through this experience, I was surprisingly able to let that all go and it was one of the most empowering experiences of my life. My body is a vessel for which my soul resides. It is nothing to be shameful about. It’s ironic because when my body fit society’s standards, I hid it. But now that my body has changed into something that can’t fit into a size 00, I was able to show it off more. That right there is amazing to me. Once you take away the judgments from society about a body being a sexual object and let yourself be free in your body, you feel free in your mind.

Awaken All My Soul

MODEL / Katie H
PHOTOGRAPHY / JASON LEE

Amidst the tranquil beauty of the Boise River, Jason Lee and model Katie H embark on a transformative shoot. Katie admits to initial nerves, but Jason’s reassuring presence alleviates her anxiety. As they explore the scenic park, Katie confronts internalized notions of modesty, finding liberation in embracing her natural self. Jason’s patience and guidance empower Katie to shed inhibitions, resulting in stunning images that mark her favorite shoot yet.

Katie says:

My shoot was amazing. I was definitely nervous because I had never done that kind of concept before. I felt anxious driving out to our location, and when I pulled up at the park, I really wasn’t sure what to expect.

Luckily, you arrived right then and I was reassured to see a normal, nice guy get out of the car. We introduced ourselves and made some small talk and I could feel myself relaxing a little bit. Like from an 70% stress level to a 50%. We talked through some outfit choices and posing ideas and I steadily felt more confident.

The location was so beautiful! The park was just like a forest with a gorgeous river and lots of plants and stuff. I felt like some kind of Pocahontas or something and it was really fun. But there was definitely some part of me that was holding back. My whole life as a woman I have been trained to behave “modestly.” To hide my body for fear of offending someone else.

It was insanely hard to fight this internal battle throughout the shoot. I know this inner struggle made me more difficult to shoot.

But you were great the whole time. Reassuring me, helping with my posing, and most of all having the patience to help me embrace my most natural self.

Your final product is stunning, I can honestly say this is my favorite shoot! ❤

Katie had so much fun that she asked me if I would do an artistic nude shoot of her and her sister. Here’s a link!

Break the Silence

Despite the dreary skies caused by fires across the Pacific Northwest, Jason Lee and model J find beauty amidst the haze. The smoke acts as a natural light box, casting a soft, diffused glow that enhances the colors and features of both the environment and the model. In this unique setting, they capture stunning images that transcend the atmospheric conditions, showcasing the resilience and allure of their collaboration.

J’s beauty rises amidst the smoky skies. I love her spunky attitude!

In a word: EPIC. Jason Lee and Willow ventured into the Oregon desert, where the vast expanse of the playa stretched before them. Surrounded by cracked earth and distant mountains shrouded in mist, they embraced the solitude of the desert. With nothing but silence to accompany them, Willow’s dance across the barren landscape became a mesmerizing spectacle, capturing the essence of raw beauty amidst the desolate terrain.

The sound of silence was in our ears as Willow danced across the desert.

Amidst the serenity of an Idaho summer morning, Jasmine and Jason Lee embarked on an adventure into the depths of an abandoned train tunnel. Immersed in the cool shadows of forgotten history, they explored the eerie yet captivating atmosphere together, capturing moments of mystery and wonder amidst the echoes of the past.

Supposedly, railroad tracks are cliche’ when it comes to photography, but railroad tunnels? That’s next level! 🙂

In a captivating fusion of body paint and abandoned spaces, Jason Lee captures the essence of anonymous beauty. Against the backdrop of forgotten landscapes, the human form becomes a canvas, adorned with vibrant hues that contrast with the desolation surrounding it. The result? A breathtaking visual narrative that leaves viewers in awe of the stunning juxtaposition between the ethereal and the forgotten.

I’m floored for two reasons. 1. I got to shoot with this amazing human. 2. This space we were shooting in was torn down and is no more.

Their photo sessions are not just about capturing images but also engaging in deep conversations on topics ranging from philosophy to culture. Willow’s genuine spirit and adventurous nature make every shoot a memorable experience, leaving Jason wishing for more opportunities to collaborate.

What can I say? Willow and Waterfalls! She is a deep and true spirit. I could talk to her for hours on end and never get bored. One of the most fun things about doing a location shoot is the drive out there!

Nudity and Christianity – Questions from a Viewer

In a fascinating conversation, Lucas, a new follower who found Jason Lee’s Instagram profile, candidly shares his disillusionment with mainstream church attitudes toward nudity and his journey toward embracing natural nudity as a spiritual practice.

Jason Lee, of Genesis Modeling and Photography, offers insights into biblical perspectives on the body, highlighting instances of nudity in scripture and resources for further exploration. They discuss the impact of shame on sexuality and the potential for cultural shifts in attitudes toward nudity and the body. Their exchange reflects a growing movement toward reclaiming the body as sacred and rejecting harmful taboos.

A new follower was frustrated with his local church and saddened with how he’d been treated for embracing the biblical view of the body. I thought you might want to listen in on our short conversation. For the purpose of this blog post, I’ll call him Lucas.

Jason Lee

Lucas: I saw your post about Jesus and wanted to talk about religion and naturism because most religious people are so against nudity. I just recently stopped going to church because even though it was very spiritual, there was still shame towards things like nudity.

Jason: Yeah. The goodness of the body is something the church is still mostly unaware of.  So much of what has been taught is based on non-christian ideas passed down through history instead of what the Bible actually teaches.

L: I went through a sort of awakening and ended up in nature and one day a voice in my head told me to get naked and I did! And it was amazing and I just wanted to share this bliss with the world… but the pastor at my church totally called me extreme and that I need to stay in the middle. That really got me down for a while, but I’m coming out of it.

J:  Did you know there’s actually lots of natural nudity in the Bible? Most people have no idea how normal being naked was in Scripture. In fact, Jesus was naked when he rose from the dead. A casual reader will notice that it says the grave clothes were left in the tomb. Mary saw Him from a distance and assumed he was the gardener. Why? Because in those days people did all their outdoor work naked. Mary wasn’t shocked by Jesus’ lack of attire. And it didn’t stop her from running up and giving Him a hug.

I believe that God is opening up this old truth again for our generation. Instead of hiding our bodies in darkness and assuming sin, we should walk freely in the light as He made us. Light pushes away darkness and brings maturity.

A great resource you’d enjoy is a website written by a friend of mine called the Biblical Naturist.  Matthew Neal has spent years connecting the dots between natural nudity and the Bible.

L:
I agree so many of us are waking up to this truth. Getting naked has been a blessing and has actually helped me deal with my sexuality and porn addiction. Now I no longer always have sex on the brain, not to mention the incredible self confidence and the added energy and joy. It’s beautiful.

J: That’s a great testimony. I want to share another website with you: mychainsaregone.org Another great resource that brings light into darkness and shows us that once we change our perspective on the body, addictions falls away.

L: I will check them both out! ?

J: Do! You will be blessed. After His resurrection, we have another glimpse of natural nudity when the disciples were fishing and it says Peter was naked because he was fishing (John 21:7). So he grabbed his shirt, threw it over his head and jumped in the lake and swam to the shore where Jesus was. I can go on!

L: I love it! It’s crazy how people can just ignore all that.

J: They haven’t been taught to see it. They wear cultural glasses when reading the scriptures. And many of the translations obscure the text so as not to offend modern sensibilities.

L: All this shame towards nudity has made porn rampant it has had the opposite effect. Instead of learning love, people instead hate and defile their bodies.

J: That’s right. Teaching people that the sight of simple nudity is sinful only fuels adds fuel to the fire. When you show someone the truth they can be set free and put the fire out!

L: Ever since I got healthy and started going out into nature I’ve been seeing the world with new eyes.

J: Let me tell you one more fun Christian nudity fact. Did you know that until infant baptism took off in the third century, all water baptisms were done in the nude? Men, women and children. Every believer!

L: No, I didn’t, but it makes sense. Why get your clothes wet?

J: Imagine that in today’s church!

L: Haha that would be awesome.

J: Yes, why get your clothes wet, but it was more than that, too. Going into and out of the water unadorned symbolizes being born again. Just as we enter the world naked, believers in Jesus Christ would be immersed in water and rise out–entering the new life given through Christ.  I pray that God’s people will rediscover these powerful truths.

L: I love that! and I pray that too. Slow but surely it is happening. Someone made a very good point how violence is so widely accepted and glorified but if someone is naked then it must be taken down…but plenty of sex in movies.

J: Yes. That makes me so sad that Americans would rather allow their children to see someone shot up or beaten to death than glimpse a simple body part like a nipple.

L: Things just don’t make any sense at all and people are starting to see that.

J: The more people recognize the silliness of hiding our bodies and join in, the harder it is for controllers to use the body as a product or as a tool for evil. And I bet there are other Christians in your area who have also learned this truth.

L: Yeah people wanna get rid of separation and old beliefs it’s beautiful. And I have found some people around here like me!

J: Thanks for reaching out, Lucas and for supporting my work. It’s encouraging to hear that God is revealing truth all over America.  Let’s keep sharing!
